Moving the Focus Back onto Learning; The Importance of Hoisting & Specialist Equipment in Schools
It’s that time of year again, the end of the glorious British summertime! Which means, of course, the countdown to a whole year of new students enrolling.
As exciting a time as this is, with new students comes the potential for before un-encountered needs to be met. It is estimated that around 7% of children are disabled and a significant number of children have both Special Educational Needs and a disability. Most children with SEN and disabilities are educated in mainstream schools.
OpeMed Brand New ‘Design and Approach to Installing Changing Places’ Guide
Posted on February 21, 2018
The updated BS8300:2018 is now in place. The British Standard takes the form of guidance and recommendations, and this particular iteration refers directly to Changing Places toilets and what is required to create a fully compliant facility.
Of course, nobody wants to be caught out where the standard has introduced new changes, but reading through can be a time-consuming process. As Co-Sponsors of the Changing Places campaign, we amalgamated the new BS8300 recommendations with the Changing Places Guide and our knowledge as suppliers and installers to create a new ‘Design and Approach to Installing Changing Places’ Guide.

What is your colour?
Posted on October 11, 2017
What is your colour? For many years’ artists, scientists and researchers have been interested in the psychology of colour. They found that colour can have a profound effect on the human mind and emotions; evoking memory, affecting mood and influencing behaviour.
- Cool colours create a sense of calm
- Yellow is a subtly optimistic, happy colour.
- White has long been a symbol of purity and cleanliness.
- Light reflecting colours create an illusion of space.
- Reds, oranges and browns make a space feel warm and welcoming.

SEN Equipment Taken Seriously

SEN Bathroom and Classroom Equipment
Almost a fifth of children in Britain are identified as having special educational needs (SEN). It is estimated that around 7 per cent of children are disabled and a significant number of children have both SEN and a disability. Most children with SEN and disabilities are educated in mainstream schools. Around one per cent of the total school population is educated in special schools.
Part of OpeMed’s SEN Patient Handling Equipment offering is our ability to listen and adapt to what our SEN customers really need. We have completed multiple SEN projects across the country, working closely with the architect, main contractor and school. Requiring both adaptations of existing facilities (classrooms, assisted bathrooms and sensory rooms etc.) and the creation of Hoisting and Changing solutions for new build additions.

Designing Facilities for Disabled School Children: Read OpeMed’s White Paper
Designing accessible areas for disabled school children is something that requires the consideration of the needs of the children specifically, as well as this there should be specialist advice given by an occupational therapist or other healthcare professional.
One child in 20 under the age of 16 is disabled. Some 60% of statemented children are now in mainstream schooling. Over 20,000 students have a disability- almost 6% of the student population.Yet according to research by the Bog Standard campaign for better school toilets, 57% of schools surveyed did not have any disabled toilets.

Fitting Ceiling Hoist Multi-Room Access
As part of our unique support offering to customers, we aim to ensure that we can create a practical solution for your ceiling hoist and ceiling tracking in any multi-room environment. Our ceiling hoist solutions are guaranteed to offer our customers increased flexibility, reduced transfers, safety and a smooth ride.
The design team at OpeMed can design multi-room hoisting to suit your project via a number of methods:
– OpeMed can create ceiling hoist track which traverses through the door header into the en-suite/bedroom using a variety of different methods. The best solution is where the track forms part of the door header, and a taller than normal door is used so when the door is shut there is no gap for light or noise to transfer through from room to room. If this is not possible then a cutout can be made between the top of the door and the ceiling.
– OpeMed can design a gate system which enables multi-room access with no additional transfer required

Lift and Lock Changing Table
Posted on May 13, 2014
Commonly installed in multi-user environments, the lift and lock changing table is manually height adjustable and can be stored upright within 180mm of the wall. The changing table can be adjusted to suit different heights of carer and is ideal for transferring onto via overhead hoisting systems, reducing transfers and the risk of secondary or frontline back injury.
The above images demonstrate the lift and lock changing table in-situ with the guard in the upright and downwards position at a school in Worcestershire. The unit was an ideal solution for the school as it offers a space saving platform for changing children of different sizes and provides a safety guard to prevent more mobile children from climbing out or falling off.
As an alternative and inexpensive option to an electrically operated unit, the lift and lock changing table offers popular features such as incremental lengths of bench from 1200mm to 1900mm, rustproof stainless steel frame, guard and bumper options and a choice of removable mattress.
Riding Schools Using the OT200
Posted on April 16, 2014
Ceiling Hoists (Ot200) are becoming increasingly used within recreational environments such as leisure centres and riding schools. The versatile gravity powered system which re-charges whenever in use has enabled 24/7 lifting and the essential every day running by a busy riding school for example. The hoist has specially fitted dust reducing brushes on the tape as well as extended belt lengths to compensate for different sized horses and riders.
The images below show users of the hoist in a riding school using the Ceiling Hoist in the South of England. All permissions come from Cranleigh RDA Riding School.
