XY Ceiling Hoist System or H  System

We often get asked what is an XY Ceiling Hoist or H System (also known as an XY Overhead Hoist or an XY Hoist).

The simplest way to explain is an Ceiling Hoist motor that drives along a moving rail, that in turn slides up and down 2 parallel rails, allowing patient transfer anywhere within an “H” shape (hence the H system)…

Patient Ceiling Hoist Track for Nursing Homes

There are various decisions to be made by the client, architect and contractor when designing the optimum layout for a Patient Ceiling Track Hoist for Nursing Homes, whether it is the Ensuite Bedroom, Therapy Room or Assisted Bathroom.

Some initial questions that might help when first considering Ceiling Hoist Track for a Nursing Home, Hospice, Respite Centre or Care Home are:

Hoist Track Installed Flush in Ceiling

Ceiling Hoist Track in Ceiling

OpeMed Ceiling Hoist Track for optimum aesthetics can be installed flush or embedded in or into the ceiling.

Although care has to be made that ISO10535 and LOLER is not breached, installing the track in the ceiling, particularly for domestic or high end long term care provides a non-evasive installation of the Ceiling Hoist or Overhead Hoist Track.

The discreet OpeMed track, that is one of the smallest tracks on the market, can be fitted with a L shaped flange to allow the ceiling to but up against the track.

Installing Your Multi-Room Ceiling Hoist

OpeMed are the experts at integrating our Patient Ceiling Hoists with Pocket Doors (or Sliding Doors) when connecting a Ceiling Hoist (or Overhead Hoist) from one room to another room.

This is typical in an ensuite bedroom where hoisting is required between rooms and integration needs to be made between the Ceiling Hoist Track and the Pocket Door.

Ceiling Track H Systems for Low Ceilings

Posted on April 24, 2015

When an H System (also known as an XY System for Ceiling Hoists) has been specified on a low ceiling (less than 2300mm) OpeMed can install its new flush H system, where the moving rail of the H system is at the same height as the parallel rails.

OpeMed specialise in bespoke solutions and other ways of ensuring optimum lifting height in a low ceiling environment is to use a flat spreader bar (where the spreader bar is not at an angle, gaining 70mm) or we can manufacture a sling with shorter straps to regain the lifting height.

Our Policy on LOLER Testing and Weight Testing

OpeMed weight test each individual installation after install and also on each LOLER test. This is according to ISO10535, CE and LOLER. All our engineers are qualified to the latest standards and protocols.

Nearly all maintenance on the OT200 Ceiling Hoist can be completed when the hoist is on the rail, meaning less disturbance for the user and carers.

The lifting tape has an industry leading life-span, the batteries are standard off-the-shelf batteries and in combination with the quick servicing make the OT200 Ceiling Hoist the most cost-effective in the market.

Ceiling Hoist Track with Different Height Ceilings

Posted on February 2, 2015

When planning a room to room system there are often different height ceilings (e.g. in the bedroom and the bathroom). Naturally the track needs to be at one height across both rooms and OpeMed can design a bespoke solution to ensure the track is installed in the most aesthetically pleasing method as possible.

If the difference in ceiling heights is more than 300mm then some lateral supports may be required on some of the fixings, but OpeMed are experts in fabricating bespoke solutions that can be painted specifically to blend into the ceiling colour.

As the hoist track passes through the door header, the optimum solution is to have the ceiling hoist track form part of the door header, with a taller than normal door. Then with the door shut there is no gap, and there is no noise or light pollution from room to room. If this is not possible a gap needs to be cut above the door header up to the finished ceiling height.

LOLER Testing for Lifting Equipment

LOLER Testing Approval Updates

opemed loler testingThe LOLER test is a fundamental consideration when using any lifting device. Within the OpeMed equipment range, equipment such as the OT200C ceiling hoist, the OpeMax 500 floor lift and the OpeMed pool hoist all must consider a 6 monthly LOLER test. LOLER applies to lifting equipment and builds on the requirements of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER).

Who does the LOLER test effect?

  • People who use any lifting equipment provided at work
  • The user of people at work
  • The employers of people who use equipment
  • Those who represent the above people
  • People who act as a competent person in the examination of lifting equipment
